Urban sustainability: the power of urban gardens to drive change

On March 25, the EU Green project arrived in Reus at the hands of Pietro Tonini, who holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences and Technology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. The expert gave a conference on urban gardens and their impact on our society and our urban context.

EU Green's main objective is to promote the creation of green spaces and urban gardens, encouraging active participation in the growing of food and gardening. The initiative allows residents of urban centers to re-establish contact with nature, while at the same time acting as a tool for social inclusion, giving a voice and appreciation to people who feel on the margins of society, whether due to disability or other exclusion factors.

During the session, Pietro Tonini presented different models of urban gardens and explained how they can be implemented in city spaces, with special emphasis on horizontal and vertical systems. He also explained how the project aims to promote healthy habits and the well-being of the population, while raising awareness of the benefits of sustainable urban agriculture. In addition, topics such as water waste, heat islands, gray waters and how these problems can be solved through strategies and knowledge that are essential to discussing environmental issues were addressed.

At the end of the conference, there was a moment of interaction in which the participants were able to answer questions and discuss possible ways of putting the project into action.
