A group of ten young people in Šiauliai, Lithuania, joined forces with seniors to create an intergenerational garden in Gilvyčiai, Šiauliai district, next to the Gilvyčiai Care Home, currently under development. This initiative became not only the creation of a green community space, but also a symbolic bridge between different generations.
Because spring in Lithuania was unusually late this year, the first steps of the project took place indoors. The young participants prepared seeds, nurtured seedlings, and discussed the layout and plant choices for the future garden. This preparation stage provided fertile ground for dialogue: seniors generously shared their gardening expertise, while the youth contributed modern ideas, creativity, and an ecological perspective.
Only at the end of May, once the weather allowed, could the group move their activities outdoors. Together they prepared the soil, planted seedlings, and set up the first garden beds. Throughout the summer, the garden was carefully maintained – watered, weeded, and cared for through shared efforts. These activities not only produced visible results in the garden, but also strengthened bonds within the community.
The impact of the initiative went far beyond gardening. For the youth, it became a hands-on lesson in responsibility, planning, teamwork, and sustainable living. They experienced how their efforts could bring tangible benefits. For seniors, it was an opportunity to remain active, to share their wisdom, and to feel valued as mentors. Meanwhile, the Gilvyčiai community gained a green space that will in the future serve as a place for the residents of the Care Home and local people to gather, relax, and learn.
Importantly, sustainability has been embedded into the project from the start. The young people and seniors plan to continue maintaining the garden together, with seasonal activities and workshops ensuring that the space remains vibrant and useful. This means that the Gilvyčiai garden will not be a one-time initiative, but a long-term community resource where nature, education, and togetherness come together.
The Gilvyčiai experience showed that such projects cultivate much more than plants. They nurture trust between generations, responsibility for the shared environment, and a deeper sense of belonging. The roots planted here by both youth and seniors will continue to strengthen the Gilvyčiai community for years to come.
