The training on building green spaces and urban gardens, addressed to youth workers and youth within the project “Urban gardens, community space, and intergenerational bridges: Green Cities for active youth”, was held in Dublin, in Ireland, between 17 and 19 June 2025.
Ireland welcomed us with warm weather and a buzzing city. The first day was quite stationary. We met in a comfortable conference room and discussed the idea of urban gardens - green spaces in the middle of a city, offering social, educational and ecological benefits to the citizens. Given room to develop our own ideas, we worked in groups to come up with innovative (and sometimes silly ) concepts and to solve actual problems.
As we were also introduced to the city of Dublin, there was no other way to spend the second day than to go out and explore! After meeting at the Trinity College, we walked to a location were a visionary project is being held, so called pocket forest. Compact space, where nature is given freedom to grow and blush. We went on for a walk around the city, arriving at a different location where urbanization and nature mixed, cleverly utilizing old containers, coffee grounds etc. to give some freshness to the surrounding concrete.
Wrapping the trip up at a lovely Dubh Linn Garden, we were ready to explore the beauty of the city even more. The third day did not disappoint in that aspect. The activities began at the Phoenix Park, an enormous green space filled with possible activities. Small ceremony was held, the certificates were given and finally we were able to enjoy the incredible weather, walking down sunny paths. Part of the group decided to rent some bike while others relaxed with a cup of lemonade. After such an intense trip, all of the teams were ready to depart, full of new knowledge and wonderful experiences.
We appreciate the time spent in Ireland. It was very informative and knowledgeable. Hopefully, youth workers will effectively spread this valuable knowledge and share unforgettable experiences.
