The power of compost: turning waste into resource

The youth activities under the EU Green Project are ongoing, and this time participants had the opportunity to improve their knowledge about good composting practices, culminating in the construction of their own composter next to the garden where the project has been developed.

The afternoon began with an educational discussion on the importance of composting: how it should be done, which types of waste can or cannot be included in the compost, and the reasons behind these choices. The goal was to equip participants with useful information to help them become more conscious and informed citizens regarding sustainable practices.

During the session, participants learned to distinguish between green waste, brown waste, and materials that should not be composted. To consolidate these concepts, an interactive game was played in which participants identified different types of waste and categorized them correctly.

Before getting hands-on, an explanation was given on how to organize the waste materials properly in the composter, aiming to maintain a suitable balance between nitrogen and carbon, essential for efficient decomposition.

With this knowledge, it was time to move to the field. Everyone actively took part in building the composter, following the instructions they had learned, and started layering the materials correctly to ensure the final compost would be rich in nutrients.

Once again, this project proved to be a valuable tool for practical learning, equipping participants with skills they can apply in their daily lives, in an atmosphere of idea sharing, cooperation, and good spirits.
